President Arthur initiated massive Civil Service reform to fight government corruption. He also advocated reducing tarrifs and taxes. He signed the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 which banned Chinese immigration to the United States for ten years. Dearest to the President's heart were his efforts to renovate the White House.
