Lyndon B. Johnson (1963-1969) 1

Stoked up the Vietnam War, micro-managed it from the White House, completely incompetently. This country may never truly recover from the damage. Initiated enormous social/welfare programs without regard to efficiency or fiscal responsibility. The country may never recover. Hated John Kennedy, feuded with Bobby Kennedy, J. Edgar Hoover, Ben Bradlee, and anyone else who dared to cross or contradict him. Left office with the country in a shambles: militarily, fiscally, socially. Never have I seen the country exhibit so much hatred: war protests, race riots, Chicago 7. You name it, he not only divided it, both sides hated the other with a passion. You think Bush is divisive? Some think Clinton was divisive. Hillary, Reagan, Bush, Sr.? They were all minor leaguers compared to LBJ.

although president johnson probably went overboard in his zeal for the great society, he was largely responsible for ensuring that all americans, most notably black americans, were given the rights of citizenship and were treated equally. this is not to say that we are now a perfect society and discrimination no longer exists, but conditions today are infinitely better than when he took office.
