I loved this movie because it was suspenseful and I think it's the best acting I've ever seen from Gibson. Yes, there could have been more aliens and less drama. I still thought it was a very suspenseful film, though.
badbearduke 05/23/2006
Once again, Mel Gibson has shown the world that he cannot act! One word Mel: RETIRE.

Crop circles are an interesting concept. They pop up a lot and we don't know where they come from. Some do suggest that they are the work of aliens. That may be, and a film about aliens causing them isn't entirely a bad idea. Shamalan just didn't do a very good job with this. The aliens hate water (you may have read about this on Maddox' page), yet 70% of this planet is covered in water. If they're smart enough to develop ways to travel across the galaxy, I'd think they'd be smart enough to know to stay away from the stuff that hurts them. Also, it's overly dramatic at the end. The concept or idea of everything happening for a reason is something that's okay to explore, but please, don't be so inept about it. I wasn't scared at all by this film. I just thought it was a waste of time.

I am sorry but M. Night Shymalayan has not come close since Sixth Sense. You almost feel like he is trying to duplicate the feel of Sixth Sense. It was the same with Unbreakable, it has that over cast hardly any music feel to it. There really is much of a story here and as M. likes to do he slowly reveals the entire plot. Mel and the rest of the cast where good but you just kept waiting for some thing, any thing to happen and it did not. If you want to watch a M. Night Shymalayan movie watch Sixth Sense, it is far his best work so far.

Important because of the way it presents us with a what do I think I would do in the same situation scenario. Special effects and explosions pump up the viewing public, but the human drama is the driving force in this movie. It also made people contemplate their own mortality, as in being harvested, without elaborating on exactly WHAT being harvested meant. Consumed? Enslaved? It also required viewers to deal with their own faith...or lack thereof.

Like all Shamalyan films, boring, poorly-acted and shameful.
quezacotl 11/03/2003
boring movie. it get's 2 stars because Mel gibson stars in it, one of the best actors alive.

THIS MOVIE WAS NOT SCARRY AT ALL,IT WAS BORING. AND IT SUCKED,A LOT OF MY FRIENDS TOLD THAT WAS A SCARRY MOVIE.[NOT TRUE]IM GIVING THIS ONE STAR.
kolby1973 08/15/2003
This movie definately had its moments, but it is hardly the best sci fi movie in Hollywood. And the director is too young to be a legend yet. But I will give him credit for a fairly good film. And I might add that Mel Gibson sucked as always ! Ugh....should have given the part to someone else.
comedyfreek 08/15/2003
the cast did a great job..it was a pretty tought movie to do but they pulled it off..hats off to them..really enjoyed this movie..i think this is shyamalans best movie.the concept was really good,. the movie was scary at times and had a tinge of humour in it..absolutely loved it... and the little girl was scary in the movie..hehe\mel gibson and phoenix and the other kid did a good job..shyamalan is the god of sci-fi

You are an alien race, Super Higly Intelligent, capable of space travel and plantetary domination. So WHY I ask would you travel to and try to dominate a world which is 75% water, which is something that is your biggest weakness. Just that alone kills all credibility of the plot and makes the movie terrible. Also, the whole divine intervention, man angry at God, etc just doesn't go with an alien invasion subplot. It was not the least bit scary...well I was scared that if I died on the way home, this movie would be the last thought on my mind. Perhaps I was expecting the same quality as in The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable. I guess I was wrong. This director didn't even come close. There were so many little tangents he went out on and didn't even attempt to tie them together. The characters had no development and were inconistant. The wife could "see" things as she was gonna die, but couldn't see that she was gonna die. There was no surprise ending and the aliens looked like atheletes in body paint. Also, when the embattled earth was dealing with the invasion, which was killing thousands of people, why would the media wait until after the commercial to announce the "primative miracle weapon"? Come on.

I was expecting the movie to be alot better than this. It sucked big time, I didn't get it.
Molfan 06/21/2003
This to me is a 3.5. it is a bit better than okay. this movie had some good actors there were a few suspensful moments, but not as scarey as I thought it would be.There really was no ironic twist to this movie like the director usually likes to do. The aliens really were not very scarey they looked like People with alien costumes on. I guess I was hoping for more from this movie. I was waiting for more to happen. My family members liked this more than I did.
LP_REPRESENT 06/20/2003
That movie was so BORING! There was only one scary part in the whole film. The part when the alien thingy walked out from behind the bushes. I laughed at most of it like the part where they had tin foil on their heads.
Erik Hendriksen 05/26/2003
this should definatly be higher on the list. This is an awsome M. Night Shaymalan movie. I've watched this movie many times and i still enjoy every minute of it. Shaymalan proves you can have an exciting movie without overusing CGI in a film. This movie is awsome to watch.
reeny 05/09/2003
Dull and weird, exemplify this movie. I know it had a significant religious meaning with the alien invasion as a backdrop, but there was just to much dialogue where it was not needed and not enough action. I was disappointed when I bought the DVD. I have since gotten rid of it.
timtom 04/19/2003
I liked this movie a lot. Im scared as hel of aliens. But after you think about it- it was real y un realistic - ok heres the first few things- A) water is the most abundant resource on our planet- what if it was a foggy day?.. B) They can jump 10 ft. on to a roof, but knocking down a pantry door is out of the question. C) what was the deal with the bok the kid had- with the pics of their house and teh bodies? honestlky- what parent would say- "oh, looks like our house.. huh?.." GOD
SarahJ 03/23/2003
Painfully lame.
philc 02/20/2003
I liked it mainly because it had the theme of BELIEVING. The storyline was based on the fact that there IS divine intervention (God can heal or do anything) and there is no such thing as coincidence. Mel Gibson and the cast did very well. I'm not into aliens, so this was a decent film about them I guess. It was suspenseful and leaves you at the end with the feeling that you can believe.
tkjohns 02/11/2003
Okay, I'm sorry to say this, but I hated this movie. ALL of the characters have exactly one facial expression - disturbed. Aside from that, this would have been a much better story if they had left the whole alien thing a mystery, but to actually bring them out and cut off their fingers... Well, they lost me there.
BIGBABY 02/08/2003
This movie left much to be desired. Too much attention was focused on the theme of this movie than on the alien invasion. The alien invasion was not the purpose this movie was made. It good and suspensful the first time- only the first time. There was hardly any action in this movie at all. There were too many gaps in the movie.
oreo-man 01/21/2003
Very good movie. I wouldnt change a thing.

Awesome (adj): anything that leaves you in awe and wonder. By that definition, Signs is AWESOME. An amazing movie. You leave the theater in awe of what you just saw. See this movie!!!
lynntabatha 11/24/2002
It was ok. I thought it would of been scary that it was. But it did make me wonder.
psycho_mom 11/16/2002
I love Mel Gibson and I think he performed very well in this movie. I think that there could have been more creativity in designing the look of the aliens. The kids were GREAT! The high suspense and drama were moderated by the comedy.
Alan_Jackson 10/22/2002
Monkeys!

Signs was a very good movie. It had great directing, casting and wonderful effects. Through out the whole thing I was at the endge of my seat waiting and wanting to see what happens next, but also scared the crap out of. What a great movie, this is a movie to buy and watch over and over.
ellajedlicka21 09/16/2002
I didn't like Signs that much at all. It seems as though it's trying to give the theory that there is divine intervention and everything that happens occurs for a reason. That is the only theme. The movie itself was not very good. There was just some aliens that come to "take over" the world and one comes into the house and Mel Gibson's brother beats him senseless with a baseball bat. I was baffled at how Signs was praised by critics and John Q was shunned. I guess anything critical of a government institution will be looked down upon.

I enjoy the occasional fantasy film but admit that I’m not the biggest Sci-fi buff in the universe. However, I will go out on a limb and say that this may possibly be the most meaningful film in that genre since “The Day the Earth Stood Still”. The first thing I noticed is that, unlike many of today’s SciFi/Fantasy films, you do not start out as though you have suddenly been transported into a video game on steroids. Absent is the constant panic-stricken mode and non-stop breakneck speed. Instead, “Signs” draws you in slowly and proceeds to unfold at a nice even pace. The film features believable characters that you get to know and like going through their daily routine in a realistic location. This sense of reality is the key element that makes the more fantastic part of the story work so well; it provides the right environment for the seed of possibility to grow in the mind of the viewer. “Signs” is a very well done story with an excellent cast. The big plus is that this one not only gives you time to think but something to think about.

M. Night Shymalayan is so far-and-away the best moviemaker of our era, it's not even funny. This is an A+ movie just like Sixth Sense was (Unbreakable was perhaps an A-). As usual, his script is fantastic and unpredictable, and he takes the old Hitchcock-style tricks of suspense better than anyone. From he opening credits, he gets you off-balance with the stress-inducing socore. Ominous signs keep you on edge... but then moments of humor settle your nerves, get you involved with the characters, before he ratchets it up another notch. The whole thing is superb. A movie that's fun to think about from at least three different angles, and FUN to watch at the same time. How many films can you say that about?
mobilebuzz 08/05/2002
The story line was somewhat weak and it definitely felt like a cop out ending. Yet, the cinematography is well worth watching the movie for.
magellan 08/04/2002
A little disappointing. After really enjoying both "Sixth Sense" and "Unbreakable", I had high hopes for this film. Unfortunately, I found much of the dialogue to be forced, and several distracting gaps in the story line. While the movie had its good parts - the suspense in the first half of the movie is very well done, and a couple of the family scenes are touching, my recommendation is that you wait for this one to get to video.
