Great song to drive to when on the radio. Great vocal and great lyrics. Echoes of the past amid a promise for the future. Who are "the boys of summer"? I don't think Henley's talking directly about the Brooklyn Dodgers of the late '40's through the early-to-mid '50's although I'm sure that he's aware of the reference. Actually, the analogy does fit. The book about those Dodgers is a look back at a time past. Gone.

Carried his songwriting talents from the Eagles straight into a solo career. Probably the most talented of the group.

This song is rated as one of the Top 100 videos of all time. When I hear this song, it makes me remanice about my youth, lost love, past relationships etc. and Henely has that awesome scratchy voice. Great lyrics, great song. I would say deffinately among the Top 10 80's songs!

After more than 20 years this song still gives me the creeps. I was 19 when I heard it the first time, now I'm 40 (and still young).
BugahaNE 01/24/2006
Awesome song, reminds me of driving the freeway outside LA.
cablejockey 01/24/2006
I agree that this song has an ominous quality about it, still it is a love song of sorts. The best lines in it for me also the 'dead head sticker on a cadillac' and 'don't look back, you can never look back.'
kingguiness 01/24/2006
An 80's standard. An ominous melody with reat lamenting lyrics.
souljunkie 10/27/2005
A great song by a great artist no matter how arrogant and narcissistic he may be. He is a great songwriter. Kamylienne, I agree that "the Ataris" suprisingly re-made this tune well. They did not mess with it too much like so many young bands will do, however like most times with most things, the original is the better work of art by far.
edt4 10/27/2005
This was the only song connected with Henley and/or the Eagles that I could tolerate, even when it was getting constant airplay. The only problem was that the DJ's tended to cut off the very end, which was one of the best parts of the song to me.
zuchinibut 10/27/2005
A classic song that is still good to this day. It never feels dated to hear the Boys of Summer, and thats not an easy thing to say about songs from the 80's.
numbah16tdhaha 10/27/2005
Alot better than that hack cover they overplayed for a long while.

This song is my absolute favorite song of all time!!!!! I grew up at the beach in NJ in the 80's and this song describes it perfectly.
lukskywlkr. 01/31/2004
I saw a dead-head sticker on a cadillac. That's my favorite line from the song. I actually prefer this song over anything the Eagles ever did as a group.
VirileVagabond 11/23/2003
The Boys Of Summer is the first track on Don Henley's full-length effort Building The Perfect Beast (released in 1984), and the single remains the definitive song of that year's MTV rotation (winning best video I believe). The lyrics are timeless, representing the desire of all of us to recapture the past while knowing the attempt is futile, accompanied by somewhat haunting music. The song and LP are clearly Don Henley's best solo work and remain influential as evidenced by the number and diversity of artists who have interpreted the song (eg DJ Sammy, Ataris, Skin Of Tears, Juicy, Russ Freeman, and Codeseven). The Boys Of Summer charted in the U.S. for 14 weeks in 1984-85, peaking at #5.
kamylienne 07/21/2003
I still love this song--I definately love the re-make from the Ataris as well, they pulled it off really well. I don't know which version is better; they're both good.
