HAHA! This song is darn catchy. I like the original version a little better than the remix. The original version has the stringed folk instrument (a lute? zither?), whereas the remix omits it completely out of the background.

A truly awful song that regrettably nets three stars from me due to the reaction it causes in women during retro-80's night at bars. . .They shriek and head to the dance floor when this thing starts.

Cheesy and goofy. But it was fun to mock when you were drunk. After all these years, I'm still looking for the purpose. But everybody loved the dwarf.

Immortal, infectious and silly, "The Safety Dance" is the epitome of a classic Big 80's song. The Canadian group Men Without Hats claimed that the single is about nuclear weapons, but if so, the message was lost from day one. The video for the song was an early MTV favorite and was actually a bit groundbreaking, as it wasn't a performance video (which was typical of the day). "The Safety Dance" charted in the U.S. for 16 weeks in 1983 (peaking at #3), and its contemporary popularity is evidenced by the subsequent covers by Pain Station, Luxt, Fear Cult, and Status Quo (among others).

One of many great songs from 1983, which was one of the best years for listening to great music. I recall dancing to it a couple of times while I was hanging out in Newport, Rhode Island that year. Being a very quirky song, my dance was a composite of the Mummers Strut and the Gopher Dance from Caddyshack (The Salve Regina girls did not come back for seconds). Safety Dance had a real goofy accompanying video (and this was back in the day when MTV actually played videos) that was something like a Rennaisance Faire gone awry.

One of the most memorable '80s songs, a favorite then and now. And I personally loved that video--really out there. Where can I find a copy?
Jamie McBain 07/12/2004
Great song, but the video for it was weird.
StanUzbeck 06/05/2004
This is one of my fave 80's songs. The video features the exploitation of a dwarf as well, which is always a good time.
