I was never a big fan of the Police (I'm sure Sting won't lose any sleep over that)...to me, virtually every song sounded the same, and I always harbored the same sort of resentment towards them that I did for Elvis Presley, I think- namely, that they were "safe" and photogenic white musicians appropriating the far superior work and style of originators like Bob Marley or Jimmy Cliff or Third World or Dennis Brown, and watering that work down and making it "acceptable" and marketable for a middle-class white-bread audience (in other words, an audience of kids like myself). This song, however, I always liked and it still hasn't grown stale for me. If it comes on the radio, and it does come on often, I won't turn it off, and there are virtually no other commercial songs that got airplay on the radio in the 1980's that I can say that about.
