The media writes Boxer's epitaph every time she comes up for reelection. The polls were close until Boxer released an ad with Fiorina bragging about how she fired 30,000 people at Hewlett-Packard to save the shareholders money while simultaneously giving herself a big raise. Boxer will win by at least 10 percentage points.

UPDATED AUGUST 12, 2010: Babs Boxer is trailing her GOP opponent by about five points in the middle of August and this race jumps from a three star to a five star category. I will have to see it to believe it that the dumbest senator now sitting could actually get the hook. California firmly believes that morons need a spokesperson on the national level.ORIGINAL COMMENT: As of today, March 5, 2010, the punters on Intrade have Boxer in the 60's but she has slipped a bit. She is still the favorite to come back to wear the crown of most stupid senator now sitting in DC.

In almost any other state in the union (with a population that has even an iota of common sense), this embarrassment (and usual political liability to fair-minded Democrats) to the political arena would have been voted out a long time ago. But as irishgit points out, all signs say she is unbeatable. But the fact that Barbara "I demand you call me 'Senator'" Boxer keeps being re-elected in California says a lot about how the Golden State's once golden standards have fallen precipitously. This state, which produced great (or at least legendary) political figures such as Hiram Johnson, Earl Warren, Ronald Reagan, Richard Nixon, current U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein, and the Brown family seems now content on electing and re-electing the extremely undeserving and largely useless (as well as extremely partisan) Boxer into the office she has long considered herself entitled to. But the Republican Party in California is virtually powerless, and as much as it would be of anyone's benefit to ele... Read more

I suspect she's unbeatable. Too bad. And before anyone gets to thinking that the above means I'm some kind of hard core conservative, let me state that I think she's the kind of liberal that gives liberals a bad name. She's a bad joke in a pantsuit.

By my math, the Republicans will need to beat Barbara Boxer in California to win a Senate majority. They will also have to successfully defend all of their open seats and incumbents. CA Republicans are fielding State Assemblyman Chuck DeVoire, a right wing Republican, plus former Congressman Tom Campbell and former Hewett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina. Fiorina has the money to self-fund a race, which is very important in California, as paying for advertisements in the state's expensive media markets is an essential strategy for any candidate in CA. Campbell has well thought out views and is more ready to serve in the Senate, in terms of institutional knowledge. He lacks funding though, which could be a major hurdle. DeVoire is too conservative to be elected in California, even against Barbara Boxer. Overall, Democrats must not take anything for granted, especially after losing that Senate seat in Massachusetts. CA is not as Democratic as MA, so a Republican pickup is possible. B... Read more
