The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) 5

An excellent and very famous science fiction film from 1951. Flying saucer, robot and Klatuu's costume are vintage scifi from the period. Michael Rennie does a fine job as the benevolent alien- who also issues a dire warning. While Patricia Neal does a fabulous job as well. Hugh Marlowe plays the heavy exceedingly well- the ugly greedy opportunistic person, with little regard for integrity.

Probably the best of the sci fi alien from outer space pictures made in the 1950s. Unlike many of the other pictures of this genre there is very little death and destruction. The alien comes with a warning that if we want to fight among ourselves, that is fine but once we start bringing hostilities into outer space we would be threatening the peace that the other planets have established. The film was light years ahead of its time, with talented actors and actresses (As I stated in another post, Patricia Neal could make reading the phone book sound sexy) the films message is just as valid today as it was in 1951..... and to my friend Enkidu, Klaatu, barada, nikto to you also, sir!

Very fine film about a benevolent visitor from an interstellar confederation versus the stupidity of earthlings, especially the military and governments. Amazingly enough, this was made during the McCarthy era, but some directors and producers were braver than others. By the way that creepy electronic instrument you hear during the Gort scenes is a Theremin (they're fun to play). And don't forget: Klaatu barada nikto!
