Reagan narrowly lost the Republican nomination in 1976 to incumbant Gerald Ford. The crowd at the convention begged Reagan to come down and give these stirring remarks. (Add picture)

I'm no Reagan fan, but I remember the speech well and thought at the time, if I can be moved to tears (and remember, I was and am NOT a Reagan fan), then this is one of the most amazing speeches of my lifetime. I believe it set him up as the presumptive nominee in 1980 and for me, summed up why he was the great Communicator. I also pray sympathy for his family as he approaches the end of his long goodbye...my mother has Alzheimer's so I can definitely empathize with them. God Bless Nancy Reagan for defending stem cell research (Conservatives, wake up on this subject, will you???)

I was sitting alone at home watching this live. It was an unplanned speech, one invited spontaneously by Gerald Ford. Reagan hesitated a while before coming down. When he did, he gave what I have always considered the most inspiring political speech I ever heard. The convention crowd went totally silent and many of them were moved to tears. From that night on, I kept praying that Reagan would be our president one day. I'm thankful that a couple of years ago I was able to get a video of the speech.
