I believe Steve Vai surpassed him eventually but this guy get's tons of credit for teaching the man alone! Try the albums Flying in a Blue Dream and of course Surfing....

Very athletic axeman that sometimes confuses speed with virtuosity. While he's fundamentally sound, I feel his work lacks feeling most of the time.

Second only to Steve Vai. I've seen a large amount of concerts, and Joe Satriani is far and away one of the greats.
