I am so in awe of this amazing musician i can hardly find the right words to say about him, except that he was the one and only true god of bass. Just listen to any Who track where there was a prominent bassline eg. My Generation, Dreaming From The Waist, The Real Me etc. and you won't be able to believe your ears! just pure speed and genius. Not only the finest bass player but also exceptional on other instruments such as the french horn and piano, the only Who member who could actually read music! to quote Steve Luongo Each time you hear thunder, think of John Entwistle

Just watch his fingers go - I'm gonna show you why they call me lightnin'! And listen to tracks such as 'The Real Me' off of Quadrophenia by 'The Who' - Beyond amazing! John has been and still is an inspiration to so many both professional and casual Bass players. He was voted Bassist of the Millenium, and with a good reason, simply because he is! LONG LIVE THE OX!!!

Thunderfingers was, in my view, an exceptional musician. Besides playing bass, Entwistle also played French horn and other wind instruments. His songwriting, while appreciated by his fans, has frequently been over looked because it lay in the shadow of Pete Townshend, though Townshend himself said on more than one occasion that Entwistle was a superb song writer. I was fortunate enough to see Entwistle live 3 times, twice with the Who and once with his band Ox. Watching him play bass and actually seeing the way his hands and fingers move was an awe inspiring experience, as he made it look easy as if it was second nature to him instead of something learned. It was difficult to replace Keith Moon when he passed away but the Who still carried on with replacement Kenny Jones. But Moon, for all of his talent and energy, was a drummer and a drummer only. Entwistle, by nature of his many talents, was a larger contributor to the makeup of the Who. Except for special occasions such as fund raisers or one time musicians reunions, it would be foolish to try to replace him. There are many talented bass players in the music world but there was only one John Entwistle.

Just listen to Dreamin' From the Waist - the live version on The Who's 30 Years of Maximum R&B and you will be amazed at Entwistle's bass playing.
