I think Adams did a marvelous job in foreign affairs. He finally nailed down British evacuation of the USA territory with the Jay Treaty of 1795, and he steered through the rocky shoals of problems with the new French Republic that had executed our ally, the King of France.

Adams was a mediocre president but he did prevent a war with France, and that's how he said he wanted to be remembered.
