A true patriot.

I used to have some respect for Lieberman's moral politics, even if I disagreed the principles he relied on. Yet he showed a profound ingratitude in '06 by flouting the will of the people and running anyway, without regarding the money and support the Dems had thrown into his campaigns over the years, including his unlikely rise to VP candidate. What is it about democracy that Lieberman doesn't understand?
jgls 09/23/2007
i respect that he is willing to side with the republicans on issues such as the iraq war. we need more senators willing to put aside partisan differences for the good of the country. his speaking style leaves a lot to be desired: whenever i hear him speak he sounds like a high school bathroom monitor chastising students about the evils of smoking.

UPDATE: Dear RIA, please change the party affiliation for this weas...I mean, Senator. He finally revealed himself as the neo-con hack that I've always considered him to be when he went on record stating that we should use military means as soon as possible to prevent Iran from developing nukes. In the 50's the prevailing fear was commies hiding under our beds; now it's Iranians and Iraqis and Afghans--OH MY!--leaving their spare nukes under our beds. People of Connecticut, now's your chance to apologize for the rest of us: Ignore him the next time he slithers into an election cycle.
I think this guy needs a good slapdown into the gutter. What better way than for the citizens of Connecticut to petition for a recall ballot...as an apology to the rest of the United States citizens who must now wait on Senate bills to pass based on how bitchy or vindictive he's feeling one day to the next.
I do have to thank Joe, though, for helping me lose weight. I waxed bulimic when I saw him hug (kind of a kiss-the-ring hug) George Bush. Each time the visual returns I feel a need to purge...uh oh, gotta go...the diaphragm is spasming.
GenghisTheHun 02/24/2007
He was over-hyped and crashed and burned. He is a good senator and maybe can recover. His national aspirations are a thing of the past, however.
Enkidu 02/23/2007
I know it's small of me, but I have trouble getting past that annoying voice.

Courageous, Unwilling to Subvert his Principles, one of the Very Few Honorable Men left in the Congress.

From my home state of CT- Joe Lieberman is a man of few principals- lives in a nether world that suits his own interests- snake oil salesman at best- wish he would live or move to a right wing reactionary state that would love is cheap duplicity.

Someone who is not bullied by the party gang. I don't like Bush but you gotta respect a guy who can voice his opinion, even when it's unpopular.
RIAUSA 10/01/2006
Sen. Joe Lieberman is wrong about winning in Iraq and staying the course but he knows the conduct of the war has been mishanled. He is leading on the enviornment and national security. Ned Lamont voted with the Republicans 80% of the time in his last elective office. Do us all a favor Ned, quit playing politics.
Djahuti 10/01/2006
He is a closet Neo-Con.
EschewObfuscat ion 08/15/2006
He turned on them, on one issue. One issue. Look how they throw him under the bus. He is as staunch a democrat as there is, running for Vice President in 2000, nearly winning on one of the most consistently liberal voting records in the Senate. Has that voting record changed in any way except ONE SINGLE RHETORICAL ISSUE? He hasn't even voted on anything Iraq War related. As a conservative, I'm glad to see him leaving the Senate. He has (had) stature and connections. Enormous influence. Gravitas. Enter Ned. Looney, left-wing Ned. As an American I'm embarrassed for them. Their burning hatred of George W. Bush too much for them to contain. It's like Lieberman slept with the enemy, his career (in the Democrat Party) must be terminated . . . and they compare us to the Nazi's. One question: what if Ned Lamont loses in November to a weak republican candidate? That would be known as poetic justice. Who's the chairman of this party again? UPDATE: What am I smoking (There is none so blind as he who will not see) ? A few examples of Lieberman's recent senatorial voting record (who he voted with): NARAL - 75-100%; NFIB - 0-17%; ACLU - 83%; NAACP - 85%; Christian Coalition - 0%; NEA - 86%; American Family Association - 0%; NOW - 75%; Citizens Against Government Waste - 0%; Gun Owners of America - 0%; NRA - 0%; nearly every labor union - 70-80%; People for the American Way - 85%. Staunch conservative, eh? Thanks for playing . . . next . . .

I agree with spacewolf. My problem with this guy is not his politics. Never mind those for the moment. My problem is his prudish and arrogant self-righteousnous. He apparently knows better about everything than anyone else. Right. One of the biggest phonies in American politics.. and that's saying a lot.

Lieberman would do the people here in Connecticut a great favor by retiring. He has ignored the people of Connecticut too long, since becoming a 'national figure'. Firstly his politics are way out of sync for a blue (and becoming even more blue) state like Connecticut. His ideas may have been 'progressive' in 1961- but not now. He and his wife (a corporate lobbyist) have too many connections with the health insurance industry (he has opposed universal/affordable health care) and other benefits for the low income. His support for the Bush/Cheney regime is perhaps his biggest mistake of all. Plus appearing on FOX News as a regular 'posterchild' and cheerleader for republican/right wing causes are another reason the voters gave him a thumbs down August 8th. I believe Joe cost Al Gore from winning in 2000. I do hope Al Gore comes to campaign for Lamont- which would really frost Liebermans out of control vanity.
Spacewolf 08/13/2006
A self righteous phoney- arrogant idiot and total egoist. Needs to switch parties and become part of the GOP Neocon legions -Bush/Cheney/Rove

Quite possibly one of the most centrist voices in the Senate, not quite to the right like Zell Miller, but he's definitely out of step with some of the more rank-and-file members of the Democratic party. He may well return to the Senate next year, but as an independent. This year, he's getting a very aggressive challenge from his left in the Democratic primary. Ned Lamont, his challenger in the Democratic primary, is getting plenty of support from various liberal groups who oppose Liebermans position on the Iraq War. Generally speaking, on foreign policy and security issues, he is Bush biggest Democratic supporter in the Senate. This leads me to wonder how things would have turned out had he won the 2000 election with Al Gore, who has gone on to become one of Bush's strongest critics on Iraq, national security and executive powers, all issues which Lieberman backs Bush very strongly on. Perhaps a presumptive Vice President Lieberman would have lost favor with a President Gore? We never will know.
edt4 07/06/2006
He's a Democrat like Zell Miller is a Democrat. Awful hack politician, which is assuredly why the Republicans love him.
frogger20190 07/06/2006
He's a Neo Con in Democratic clothes. His true colors are now showing.
JohnSpina 04/17/2006
A TRUE liberal,not a PC,ultra left wing lugnut.I like and respect him.
norainbows 01/12/2006
I refuse to vote for any Democrat until they are unleashed from the liberal left. If I changed my mind, Lieberman would be the man. I don't always agree with him yet he has my respect.

Probably the last of the real Democrats. Soon to be replaced by socialist bloggers.

I believe Mr. Lieberman is truly a good man. There are times that I agree and disagree with him, but he has always struck me as being sincere.
celticprince 04/30/2005
More suited for Wyoming or Idaho- way too conservative for a progressive state like Connecticut- Joe it's time to go! From a fellow Connecticuter like myself.
caligula 04/19/2005
Religious fanatic and has the personality of cottage cheese.
Aquilonious 03/13/2005
Lieberman seems to get rolled over by many of the opposition party. Like Clinton, he seems to waiver back and forth over many issues and has made some questionable judgments, like blaming the PC Gaming industry for the Columbine disaster. He was pathetic in the 2000 VP debate with Cheney--a debate he should have easily one but one he gave in to Cheney's false claims about his success in the private sector (Halliburton has benefited immensely from govt contracts).
alpepper 02/09/2005
He seems like a righteous and good enough man, as well as a respected and competent Senator. Is it my imagination or is there a reason why Joe Lieberman and Jackie Mason have never been seen together. As a retired career Naval officer, I lean towards the Pachyderm. However, as one of the so-called chosen, I watched the 2000 Election with interest to see if the country was receptive to vote a Jewish man one heartbeat away from the Presidency. I am curious as to whether Lieberman's J-Factor affected the outcome of the 2000 Election. I do recall one Jewish columnist complaining, We needed a Jewish VP candidate in the mold and stature of Jackie Robinson. We ended up with the Jewish equivalent of Choo Choo Coleman.

I feel Joseph Lieberman is a good man who has been overshadowed by the fringe left of the Democratic Party. A man of great moral principle and judgment, he epitomizes some decency in an increasingly poisonous political atmosphere. A self-effacing man with the good of his country first and foremost in his heart, many from both of the major parties ought to learn from this man about professionalism and substance. By the way, why is it that when a Democrat like Lieberman decides to put aside party politics in place of his/her conscience, that others within his/her party start to demean and disparage him? Isn't liberalism originally about being open-minded to any and all ideas? Isn't it also about being 'inclusive'- unlike Republicans who liberals continually blast as being 'exclusive'? Yet, when a man like Lieberman speaks his mind about what he feels, it is taboo. Isn't this hypocritical?
hermangwynn 01/30/2005
Stand up guy. If I lived in Con. I might jump the line and vote for him. Would have Come closer to betting Bush then the traitor Kerry.

Seems grounded in reality on issues both domestic and foreign.

Don't fall off you chair as you read this; I'm actually sticking up for a liberal! Lieberman seems to be one of the most candid, honest, and sensible guys on the political scene today (at least, that's the way he strikes me). I guess that's why he got hosed as a Democratic candidate. He's fairly self-effacing, has a good sense of humor, and really does come across well in his concern for making things better in this country. OK, that's about as far as I can go embracing the Left today!
