The loss of life was tragic, but I don't think it is a coincidence that two of the most beautiful cities in the US (Chicago and San Francisco) were both constructed following great natural disasters. 1870-1930 was the golden age of American architecture; buildings from that era look better than nearly anything built today. Sadly, the rise of the Bauhaus/Modernist architecture since the 30s has made architecture an ugly business of glass/concrete shoeboxes and tower-blocks. If Chicago burned to the ground today, it would be rebuilt as a much uglier city-a true tragedy.

The Great Chicago Fire was one of the greatest disasters of the 19th Century. A large portion of the city was burned down to the ground. Out of the ashes however came the re-development of Chicago into one of the most architecturally interesting cities in the country. The fire began at an immigrant's home and spread throughout the city. At the time, the city contained many tightly packed houses that were all made of wood; this enabled the fire to spread more rapidly. The heat from the flames were so intense that it actually leapt the Chicago River a few times, burning the city hall, hotels and residential areas. The fire was put out 3 days after it began; only when the weather cooled off did the fire go out. In the end, there were about 200 deaths, a remarkably small number considering the intensity and width of the fire. Chicago at the time contained about 300,000 people, about 100,000 of them living in the fire zone! Luckily, the city was re-developed with fire safety issues in mind. And they didn't do such a bad job architecturally speaking as well.

There was some really good things to come out of this fire. The counrty addressed fire issues in Urban area, making Fire escapes a requisite. Building were designed with fire prevention in mind. Chicago was rebuilt with state of the art building techniques and designs , pioneering a new age in Architecture and bringing us Skyscrapers. The city became better because it had to rebuild and make itself over.

Big deal. Peshtigo fire in Peshtigo, WI killed 2,000 on the same day. Chicago fire only was the 2nd worst fire of the day, and it wasn't even that close!

I couldn't even imagine what it feels like being burned alive. Good grief, this is a horrible tragedy, and I think I am done rating tragedies for one night. It is depressing, and if I keep going I won't be able to sleep. Ugh. RIP to all of the people who have been killed in all of these tragedies listed on this list. How can one persons tragedy be considered worse than someone else's? I think they are all tragedies to the equal when someone is killed in such ways. It all just sucks :(
