When I first saw this movie on VHS in the 1980s, it didn't hold much interest for me: the plot made no sense, the characters seemed unsympathetic, and the production values were nonexistent. By I saw it again in the 90s, I was listening to punk and I found it difficult to understand how I'd ever managed not to get it. This is a classic punk film, made for pennies -- you have to have a taste for the bizarre to enjoy it, but if you're even a partial fan of cult, you need to give Repo Man a roll.

Excellent, taking a sharp turn into the surreal in the first ten minutes and putting the accelerator on the floor. Great script, better than average performances, lots of fun.

Deserving of cult status this movie delivers Harry Dean Stanton's best performance next to Alien. The air freshener hanging on the motorcycle handlebar is classic.

This movie was too smart for it's time. It was great satire and a biting social commentary. All this and wrapped in a great, eerie surreal movie with great characters (Harry Dean Stanton's best role!!) and some wonderful odd dialogue. Plus it had one of the best movie soundtracks out there - a sampler of mid-80's neo-punk and a couple of classics including !Iggy Pop! singing the title song!!

Directed by Alex Cox, Repo Man (1984) is a science fiction, noir film that makes the best of black comedy and character actors. For the uninitiated, jobless punker/slacker Otto Maddox (Emilio Estevez) gets tricked into a new career as a repo man by a stranger named Bud (Harry Dean Stanton), when the term ripping meant automobile repossessing rather than copying tracks off of compact disks. Pretty soon all the repo men in Los Angeles are on the hunt for a 1964 Chevy Malibu that comes with a $20.000 reward. Turns out the driver of the Chevy is a renegade scientist with a mysterious object in the trunk that seems radioactive. The atmosphere of the film is dark and real, yet surreal simultaneously. Estevez turns in one of his best performances, but it is Stanton who essentially carries the film. As a bonus, the soundtrack is replete with period artists (eg Le Plugz, Black Flag, and Iggy Pop), which helps with the feel of the movie. The bottom line is that Repo Man is a must see for cult film enthusiasts and for anyone who enjoys something a bit different.
