In my opinion, Mike Nichols could do no wrong until he directed this disaster. I suspect when one adapts a smashingly successful foreign language film such as La Cage aux Folles into English for lazy American consumption, one is confronted with withering obstructions. Withering, indeed, were the performances of Ro bin Williams' diluted Ugo Tognazzi rendition of Armand and the embarrassing clownish overacting of Nathan Lane in Michel Serrault-owned character of Albert. It may be that once the disastrous casting had been contracted, there was little hope for the charmingly fey frothy quality of the remarkable original. Heavy-handed mutton!

I hated it. For me it's not a gay issue or anything of that nature. It was just a bad movie.

Terrible version of the great French movie La cage aux folles. See the original.
