A brazenly crooked,whisky-drinking, speechifying old rogue, who nonetheless created a country largely through the force of his own will.

He started it all. He was the first Canadian Prime Minister and basically built the country.

By virtue of being the first, Sir John A. will always be more highly regarded than he ought to be. He was an alcoholic, disagreeable man who was not overly ethical and while he certainly had the strength of his convictions, he has received a lot of credit for work that MANY others did in helping to creat our nation.

He was good, but not by any means perfect. At times he was anything but. His greatest accomplishment was, in my mind, was helping unite the country by creating the Canadian Pacific Railway. But, he was a reason for the riots of Metis, as well as other bad things... not bad... but not that great.

He may not have been the greatest leader towards the end, but he got this country going without a war and the shipping away of thousands of loyalists.
