He took pride in the words I am a doughnut? In all seriousness, however, this was a great speech. Kennedy later said that if he had told the people in the audience to tear down the Berlin Wall, they would have. [Updated: The official translation of Ich bin ein Berliner is indeed I am a Berliner. Unfortunately, a Berliner is a type of doughnut there (Berliner does not translate to be doughnut.) Kennedy's German was correct. I guess it's good that JFK didn't tour Germany: I am a Hamburger (Hamburg), a Frankfurter (Frankfurt) and a doughnut.]
