I wish that American exceptionalists would consider this statement from a former President. Contrary to what George Bush and others have claimed, we don't have a mandate from God to bring democracy to the denizens of the developing world, whether it be Iraq, Afghanistan or anywhere else. We have our way of doing things, but it certainly isn't the modus operandi everywhere. We make big mistakes whenever we stick our nose in the affairs of other nations excessively, many times yielding a result that was worse than the original situation. Witness our involvement in Iran, Vietnam, Iraq, Cuba, the Koreas, et al.

Something tells me this isn't framed and hanging on the wall of the Oval office these days. Actually this speaks from an era of hard-line isolationism, and concern of being involved in a European conflict, rather than any modernist policy.

Made some sense when it was first said- makes a different point today. . .it is a lesson clearly lost on flag-wavers from (insert large nation here). . .

Tell that to the Bush administration.
