Kaline's batting abilities can be seen by looking at his stats. But not his fielding abilities. He was the best defensive outfielder i have ever seen, and may be the best ever. He had such an intuitive sense of where the ball was, that he made difficult catches look easier than they were. he absolutely owned the right field wall. his arm was not quite as powerful as clemente, but it was more accurate. he was such a modest player, that he must be one of the best players that people never heard of.

Quiet, unsung hero whose rep is tarnished by years on mediocre Tiger teams. Played the game the way it was meant to be played.

Clemente without the style. A little more power, more walks, a little less BA. Just about as good in the field without the flair. Both very strong Threes and Three, as I said, is not merely OK in my book.

Actually 4 stars but my blind alliegance to the Tigers makes Kaline a 5 in my book. His DNA flows through the organization. A much revered figure in Motown. He, along with fellow Hall of Famer, George Kell called Tiger games for many years on WDIV and later for UPN50 in Detroit.

As a 20 year old in 1955, Al became the youngest player ever to win a batting title. An 11-time Gold Glove award winner, he led Detroit to the 1968 World Championship by batting .379 with eight RBI's in his only World Series appearance.

Rock-steady for 20+ years, all with The Detroits (as Ernie Harwell was wont to say). Not a bonafide power hitter (never hit more than 30 in any season), but finished with 399 taters. Year-in and Year-out, put in very good numbers and made it to the exulted 3000 hit milestone. He reminds me of George Brett in that regard. Kaline was also one of the best defensive outfielders of his day. All-in-All, Al_Kaline's consistency was the Basic reason in the Litmus Test for his Hall of Fame selection [Get It?!?]

One of the greatest players most people have never heard of. His stats speak for themselves. If you want to know how good he was, ask some of the pitchers who had to face him. He was somewhat overshadowed in Detroit by Denny McLain's bad-boy antics on and off (he won 30 games in 1968) the field, and by Mickey Lolich, a great Tiger pitcher who stood out in the 1968 World Series. I believe Kaline is one of the few major leaguers who never spent a day in the minor leagues. His quiet professionalism didn't help his notoriety, but he should be rated higher on this list.

As a kid growing up in racially fractured Detroit during the sixties, it's hard to overstate just what this man meant to the community. He was beloved and idolized by blacks as well as whites. As consistently great as he was over a career that spanned around twenty years, he remains somewhat underrated for having played for the Tigers and appearing in only one world series.

No clue why Kaline's 35 and Clemente is 9th. They played almost the same exact years and Kaline has better stats any way you slice it... well anyway enough of my pet peeve. Kaline was a great player for a really long time...

Al Kaline of the Detriot Tigers was the twelfth player to reach elite 3,000-hit plateau. He socked 399 homers and attained .297 career average, with nine years in .300 class. Finished in all-time top 15 with 2,834 games, 3,007 hits, 1583 RBI's, 4,852 total bases. Played 100 or more games 20 years and had 242 consecutive errorless games in outfield, 1970 - 1972, for A.L. records. Led in hits and won batting title in 1955 at age 20.

A great player. And how many athletes ever turned down a hundred grand because they thought they were overpaid. Kaline deserved to be a zillionaire.

Run, Hit, Hit with power,strong/accurate arm, one of the greatest fielding right fielders of all time, a class act on and off the field. Anyone who rated him less than "great" never saw him play. Casey Stengal respected the "Line" as much as any opposing player.

Al Kaline was my idol when I grew up. I have always been a Tigers fan, and that was a memorable season of 1968, coming back from 3 games to 1. The city rallied behind them. What a great player.
