He became a bad influence but was a good statesman. He is very important to history.

John C. Calhoun (1825-1829 Under J.Q. Adams, 1829-1832 Under Jackson) 1

Possibly the most interesting Vice President in history. He and Andrew Jackson detested each other, and thus, Calhoun was not included in major Presidential actions. Jackson and Calhoun clashed over states' rights. Calhoun believed that the states had the right to nullify an unfair law. Jackson, who favorited higher tariffs which the southern states threatened to nullify, refused to allow the southern states to nullify these higher tariff rates, threatened to use military force to prevent secession and rebellion. Calhoun, with a deep hatred for Jackson, left the Democratic Party in 1832 just before Jackson's re-election campaign. Needless to say, Calhoun and Jackson did not work well together due to their political disagreements and personal hatreds for one another.
