Lincoln never met him until after the election. He was a non-entity.

um, wasn't this guy the leader of the a team? would have been a better president than andrew johnson, but so would my dog.

He served ably and supported Lincoln's management of the war, but he and Lincoln clashed over what to do with the post-war Confederacy. Hamlin's identification with Radical Reconstructionalists caused him to be dropped from the ticket in 1864.
