He served well as Vice President, traveling on several Goodwill tours of Latin America and the Far East. He withdrew his name from the ticket in 1944 in return for a cabinet appointment. He resigned from that appointment in 1946 due to his extreme disdain for Harry Truman's policies toward the Soviet Union.
