As Senate Majority Leader for much of the preceeding Roosevelt-Truman era, Barkley was largely responsible for Truman's victory in '48, by curbing the strength of the Dixiecrats in Southern states.

Alben Barkley was a very active Vice President who attended cabinet meetings and National Security Council meetings regularly. Truman was determined not to follow in the footsteps of Roosevelt and thus made it a point to include the Vice President in all Presidential actions and seek his counsel.
