Unforgiven is my favorite movie, and is magnificent. However, his body of work is mixed. I Love him, but in all fairness, there are a few directors who are better, so he can't get 5 stars - but close:)

One of the last of a breed, film makers whose main interest is telling a story and doing so by assembling a cast of fine actors and letting them work with a good script.. I can't think of a single Eastwood directoral effort that featured anything resembling special effects. Movies need more directors who direct actors instead of action.

It's time to call Eastwood what he is- a great film director. People thought he hit the heights with "Unforgiven" but then there's "Mystic River" (great) and then there's other works: Letters from Iwo Jima, Million Dollar Baby, and Pale Rider. One of the most underrated canon of films if you ask me.

Eastwood is like my favorite film director. He does great movies and he's a tremendous actor, but better director. And i don't blame him for telling spike lee to shut his face. But Eastwood is great.

Clint was a major director by the end of the 70's as evidenced by High Plains Drifter, Play Misty for Me, The Gauntlet & The Outlaw Josey Wales (the film Orson Welles described as 'one of the great westerns'). In the 80's the jazz bio Bird & White Hunter, Black Heart (the latter a fascinating condemnation of the macho types Eastwood himself had built his career playing) along with the charming & satirical Bronco Billy showcased Eastwood's interest in stretching himself as both director & actor. In the 90's Unforgiven, A Perfect World & Bridges of Madison County ranked amongst the best American movies of the decade. Eastwood also directed a sympathetic film about gays & transvestites called Midnight In the Garden of Good & Evil along with crowdpleasing blockbusters such as Space Cowboys & potboilers such as True Crime & Absolute Power. In the last few years he has directed four great movies back to back with Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby & his WW2 diptych Flags of Our Fathers/Letters from Iwo Jima. No other working American director has matched this record & along with his other masterpieces - Eastwood has at least five in his oeuvre along with a string of excellent films - he currently stands as American cinemas greatest living director & amongst the top three directors in the world today.

He's a great actor, but has shown us his versatility with a wide range of movies that he's directed too.
His strength lies in his superb effort to detail, to bring out the characters, even the music, in full dramatic effect.
Rarely does anything bad, particuarly in the last 25 to 30 years. He's still going even in his 70s, he's an inspiration...Respect!....

I've never thought that actors made good directors as a general rule, but I've been impressed with Client Eastwood's work for the most part and he seems to be getting better. His latter films (e.g. "The Bridges Of Madison County" and "Million Dollar Baby") evidences Eastwood's skill at making movies built on dialogue, tone and mood. Not among the greatest yet, but he's getting relatively close. Clinton Eastwood, Jr. was born May 31, 1930 in San Francisco.

Some ups and some downs. I bump him to a four for his roles. He directorial work is getting better.

A very strong director with a good narrative sense. His movies are always entertaining and technically proficient but they stop short of greatness.

A 3.5 really- he has gotten much better with age.

Eastwood has made the leap from acting to directing with grace, and has done an amazing job in such movies as Midnight in The Garden of Good and Evil and Million Dollar Baby.

As a director he's rarely put a foot wrong. My personal faves are his westerns - 'Outlaw Josey Wales', 'High plains drifter', 'Pale rider' and 'Unforgiven'. That already deserves 5 stars. then there are some classy thrillers 'Play misty', 'The Eiger sanction' and 'Sudden impact'. Not too keen on 'Bridges of Madison County' but it was fine for its type.

As great as Clint Eastwood is as an actor, he is quite possibly an even better movie director. Efficient with his time and effort, Clint Eastwood has been known to wrap up filming ahead of schedule. Eastwood has a no-nonsense approach to filmmaking, as well, as he is able to corral actors who have difficult personalities to smoothly perform altogether. Yet, his greatest contribution might be his intricate attention to detail- and at the same time present a magnificent story for moviegoers to follow. In short, Eastwood is one of THE quintessential rennaisance men of motion pictures.

I'm surprised that this guy is so low down on the list. Clint Eastwood's work is nothing but extra-ordinary. Hes one of the few directors that pays attention to detail and its all about the story and performances and less about the special effects. Its all well and good adapting a story from a book, but really and truly it's the movie directors responsibility on how to tell that story from a visual perspective convincingly. If you watch his most recent work Mystic River you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.
