Dar es Salaam is the largest city in Tanzania with an estimated population of 2.5 million residents. Dar es Salaam is Tanzania’s economic center, located on a harbor on the Indian Ocean. Formally called Mzizima, Dar es Salaam was once the capital of Tanzania. The names Dar es Salaam was given to the city by Sultan Seyyid Majid, and is an Arabic phrase meaning Haven of Peace. After the British defeated the Germans in WWI, Dar es Salaam was renamed Tanganyika. In 1998 Dar es Salaam was the site of the bombing of the U.S. Embassy by Al-Qaida.
