Revived the Heliocentric (Sun-centered) theory of the universe, conceived by several of the ancient Greeks (The idea of other solar systems, let alone galaxies, was not even conceivable at the time). While he was, of course, correct in stating that the earth and planets orbited the sun, Copernicus didn't provide much evidence to support his hypothesis, which was little more than a guess and had little effect on the course of science. The real work of building the foundations of modern astronomy was done by others, notably Kepler and Galileo.
