another terrible fraud. he might have preached non-violence and got the arrogant english out of india, but he was a huge bigot & pedophile.

If we're talking about the 20th century, I'm sure I'd rank him higher. . .but for 'world history' I regrettably have to rank someone I respect a little lower. . .

greatest leader of his time. Peace won over might.

His teachings and practices have influenced several generations of peace activists, who may be in the small minority but whose impact far exceeds the proportion of their numbers. Even the language of war has changed due to the shifts in consciousness, much of it inspired by this one humble man.

Successfully helped India to reach independence through non-violence. Like Irishgit said, Gandhi was lucky that the Brits were civilized people unlike the Nazis, the Soviets, and the Chinese Communists or even under an Islamic dictatorship (he wouldn't have lasted long under any of those govts).

I've always thought Gandhi was fortunate in that the British were a more or less civilized oppressor. I'd not have fancied his chances against Hitler, Stalin or Mao. Having said that, he was instrumental in winning independence for one of the most populous nations in the world.

He wasn't battling Hitler, so why knock him for that? An inspiration for all men, and the negative comments below are as perplexing as they are stupid.
maikuhaiku 02/11/2005
Few could argue that M. Gandhi was not among the greatest, most influential, and noble human beings of all human history.
jaywilton 11/11/2004
One of the most overrated leaders ever. His pacifism worked with the British;it wouldn't have worked against Hitler.
BeanoCook 02/14/2004
Lots of people do what Gandhi did and they don't make that big a deal of it.
LadyShark4534 09/09/2003
Gandhi has made plenty of influence throughout the world. He was one of the most recognized figures. Even if you don't like him, You gotta admit he made an impact.
