Standing for PHASed Energy Rectification, the good ol' phaser is Starfleet's primary weapon, both for hand use and use on Starfleet's numerous vessels. Coming into use in the 2260s (around the time of Kirk's original Constitution-class Enterprise), they are still in use today. That aside, they are much cooler than primitive projectile weapons (or as some call them, guns) and are very compact.
