Banning the most clever children's book there is, sounds like something Chinese government likes to do for sure.

Some how I'm not surprised considering some of the imagery but overall it shouldn't have been. Now the American McGe version that's another story

Lots of drugs and crap. I still think its a rather fun story...

I can only wonder how many adaptations this strangely wonderful story has to it. I also wonder, how kids who don't ever experience that sense of sleepy wonder ever manage to navigate between the skeptical world of inner voice versus outer voice. I think "Alice In WonderLand has so many wonderful characters, I could just fall right into the rabbit hole along with Alice.

This is my favorite children's book. It is full of charming poems like You Are Old, Father William and The Walrus and the Carpenter. It features memorable characters like the Mad Hatter and the grinning Cheshire Cat. When I was a child, I had an edition that contained John Tenniel's beautiful illustrations. When I was at Books a Million the other day I saw plenty of Harry Potter in the Children's section, but not a single edition of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. What is the world coming to ?

No matter if it's being read by a child for the sheer enjoyment of the story or by an adult looking for 'hidden meanings' this is a great story. I recently read a short version to my 3 year old grandson and he loved it .

I cannot for the life of me figure out why this book would be banned. I mean, it was obviously an inspiration to a number of drugged out hippies but I remember when I was child reading this book and never once assuming that Lewis Carroll was talking about using drugs to alter one's perspective on things. Children are the intended audience for this kind of thing, so don't assume that anyone of them would make the very adult connection between the book's contents and drugs, or pedophilia (I've heard some far out theories). Of course, the real criticism of this book was the Chinese authorities' disapproval of the human-like behaviour of the animal species. I am tempted to laugh at such a ridiculous justification for banning a book, but then I remember that there were (and are) indeed people in the world for whom this kind of thing is upsetting. Let's just hope that fewer and fewer of them ever attain political power, because they obviously have trouble with allegory and abstract thought. This is a great book.
