The attacks on it, and the death threats to Rushdie, probably increased sales ten-fold.

 | StanUzbeck (14) 10/30/2003 | What? Is it political correctedness day down at Rateitall.com? Everyone on here seems to be saying that this book unfairly stereotypes Muslims. Give me a goddamn break. Have any of you read the book? Or are you going on what Ayatollah Khomeini (who didn't read the book) said about it? While the book is an attack on Islam, and a bluntly obvious one at that, I don't see how Muslims in general are stereotyped here. Yes, a group of them follow that holy girl into the sea and drown, but that could have corresponded to the blind faith present in select followers of any religion. Yes, Gibreel stuffs his face with pork products to demonstrate that he isn't struck down by God for doing so, but Rushdie wasn't saying anything about the foolishness of descrying pork, because he's far too intelligent a writer to stoop to patronizing his readers. And anyone who knows anything about Indian religions would recognize immediately that the terrorists at the beginning of the novel were Sikh. No, this book unfairly stereotypes Muslims in the same was that The Crucible unfairly stereotypes Christians. Oh, did none of you recognize yourselves in The Crucible? What a surprise. I thought that a good cross-section of Christianity was portrayed in Miller's play. I guess I feel foolish now, equating the Puritans of 17th-century Salem with today's Christians.
I happened to like this book, because I really enjoy Rushdie's magical realism style of prose. But like any of you feel slighted by attacks on Muslims, unless you are Muslim. Spare me the sentimentality.

 | TheFreak (3) 09/26/2003 | I thought the book itself was pretty boring, like LadyShark says, and I think he portrays Muslims very unfairly. But I disagree with anyone who would censor it - I think we can benefit from reading some false, bigoted propaganda once in a whole, because it helps to get a better picture by checking the lies against the facts.

 | YouAintThere (0) 09/24/2003 | Not surprised this is banned. It perpetuates hindu stereotypes as well as Muslims. The supposed satanic verses are quotes from Muslims.
Rushdie equates Muslim people with evil.

I felt it was boring. It's about a movie star named Gibreel.
His plane is blown up by terrorists, never giving their actual faith.
But it does stereotype muslims unfairly and I disagree with Rushdie doing that.
