Where the Sidewalk Ends - Shel Silverstein 5

This was one of my class's favorite books when I was in elementary school. I don't know why it would have been banned. Story time always had the potential to be boring, as a lot of books for children just aren't that interesting. But the whole class always paid close attention when Shel Silverstein was being read to us.

Silverstein? Why Silverstein and not Rod McKuen?...Seriously, Sesame Street Goes To The Park, A Golden Book For Tots is probably currently under consideration at the PTO meeting in SOME East B****** backwoods town.

I guess no one should be surprised that almost any book is on some cretin's list. But why this one would make anyones list does, nonetheless, surprise me.

he wrote some funny original poems. some of his writings even became songs. he had a great imagination that made his writing good for both children and adults.

I checked out some sites, and it seems it was banned for its anti-authority message...basically telling kids to disobey their parents and authority and break dishes, etc. If you can think of a dumber reason to ban a book, tell me, because I sure can't.

Why would this book be considered anything but innocent?

Shel Silverstein was an outstanding children's poet and illustrator. I had this book of poems when I was a boy and I loved every one. I can only assume that it was banned because of Silverstein's work for Playboy magazine, because there certainly wasn't anything in the book to justify banning it. It is a book of poems for children, for heaven's sake. Even the Playboy theory is weak at best. Some people just baffle me.
