07/08/2008 | DAD is actually more about high-tech stuff and the 40th anniversary than a particular plot. However, they did a really great job making tributes to all previous Bond movies and still creating an entertaining story with traditional elements. Unfortunately, with Bond being captured and abandoned it has a real drawback: one does not want to be 007 watching this movie, and its wrong.

06/10/2008 | I will admit that I am predisposed to like Bond movies. I grew up in the 60's watching the Sean Connery movies with my Dad (Connery will always be the best) and they were great. But I liked this one. The Bond movies have always been more about the look and feel than they have about good story telling and great acting. In this one the vilans were dispicable, the women were beautiful, the cars were cool and though it wasn't the best I still had fun.

11/04/2007 | I didn't think this was terrible, like many critics. But it is a usual glossy shallow British film trying to make it big in America. Stick to what you're good at. The effects look outdated, the use of the Eden project as an Antartic corporate HQ was laughable and Robert Carlyle is utterly unconvincing.

02/24/2007 | I just finished watching this film on DVD. It was an easy way to spend a couple of hours on a rainy Saturday afternoon. (In Seattle that is most Saturday's) Halle Berry was incredibly bad as Jinx-she actually won an acadamy award? But I have always liked Pierce Brosnan as Bond, although my father says he is too wimpy. Generational differences probably, he also thinks I am too wimpy! Did not like the torture scene, although it is not nearly as disturbing as the one in Casino Royale. Okay, time to go splash in the puddles. (And my Dad calls me wimpy!)

02/09/2006 | Halle Berry makes the proceedings at least watchable, and the homage to Ursula Andress's bikini might have been worth the price of admission. I think the film did well at the box office based on hype and Halle's box office appeal at the time, but its pretty clear they have run out of ideas and need to either rethink what Bond Movies are about, and put some character back in them, or pack it in. I heard that Quentin tarantino wanted to go back and make a series of films that were true to the books. Those I would go and see.

12/09/2005 |  I think that "Die Another Day" is an OK movie, but it could have been better.
The reviewer who said that the Bond franchise has lost its way has gotten it right. Ever since - in my opinion - "The World is Not Enough", the Bond franchise has relied more on special effects and glitter than a compelling, exciting story.
"Die Another Day" takes this problem a step further. I think that DAD had far too many special effects and computer animation and not enough story to back it up. Sixties Bond movies may not have had glittery special effects, but they had good stories that engaged the viewer. "Die Another Day", on the other hand, featured a rather mediocre story that isn't especially memorable.
I like Brosnan as both Bond and an actor in general. Halle Berry doesn't really do much for me, personally, but I thought that she was pretty good as a "Bond Girl". I liked the opening credits, that depicted Bond's experiences in a Communist prison camp also; it may be most artsiest Bond movie opening of them all. The Bond franchise, however, needs to stop using special effects as a crutch!

07/22/2005 | In the modern age, the Bond franchise has undoubtedly lost its way. Where there should be a grandiose theme tune, we have instead a relentlessly tinny and scratchy one. Where we should have clever and original action sequences, we have ridiculously extravagant ones (when Bond was being chased across frozen wastes by a satellite directed laser beam, I was slapping my forehead in frustration). Where we should have cheeky innuendo and sexy insinuations, we have the most gratuitous sex scene in Bond history (hearing the perennially bland Pierce Brosnan grunting and groaning is a downright disturbing experience). With this film, the Bond franchise took a step closer to becoming just another ho-hum series of action films. There is, however, hope on the horizon in the form of the next Bond film, Casino Royale. In this next installment, Bond will apparently be returning to his roots. After this film's reductive silliness, that can only be a good thing.

04/20/2005 | I am giving this movie a harsh rating for the following reasons. The movie gets off to an awful start from which it cannot recover. The opening sequence is painfully long. The title song by Madonna is one of the worst songs she has ever sung. Bond himself being captured and tortured for such a long time is a first in Bond films - but it doesn't work for me. I think Halle Berry is overrated - especially as a Bond girl. The scenes in Cuba are good but the lengthy screen time in Iceland makes one give this film an icy response literally. Lastly, after seeing Brosnan in his fourth Bond movie - I conclude that he makes a good Bond but is a lousy actor and I am glad that this was his last venture as Bond.

04/05/2004 |  Sadly, when all things are considered, Die Another Day (2002) is an average (at best) James Bond film. This time Bond (Pierce Brosnan) is captured and tortured for a year in North Korea. He eventually gains his release after a spy exchange only to find that Q now doubts his usefulness. Out for revenge, 007 travels to Cuba and Iceland only to find that his Korean nemesis has undergone a metamorphosis to further his scheme to reunite the Korean Peninsula. Along the way, 007 meets a competing female agent Jinx (Halle Berry) and must work with and against British spy Miranda Frost (Rosamund Pike). This Bond film fails for several reasons. The plot is reminiscent of Diamonds Are Forever (1971), the villain Gustav Graves (Toby Stephens) is too much like Zorn from A View To A Kill (1985), Brosnan is already showing his age in the role, the movie relies overly on action and stunts for a 007 outing, Bond getting captured for such a long time is out of character, and the theme song by Madonna is not a good fit. The bottom line is that Die Another Day fails to live up to expectations, as have most of Brosnan's outings as Bond except for GoldenEye (1995).
