Yes, I believe all appointments/politicians should have term-limits. They all start becoming self-serving after a few years anyway.

No, although I'd support a mandatory retirement age of 75 or so. A term limit implies that the experience a justice gains is worth less than pandering to current tastes.
Electing the Supreme Court will make them even more prone to the whimseys of fashion. If you think you have faulty decisions now, implement elections and come talk to me again three elections from now.
I'm not suggesting that the Supreme Court has not made flawed decisions, either recently or in the distant past. I am suggesting that flaws come with the territory, and term limits and elections are going to create more flaws than they fix.

Yes, 4 years as the President. And let the people elect them, not appointed by politically inclined agendas. The election should be done at the half of each Presidential term to detach it from any political entanglement. Let Americans have a say in the Supreme Court!

Mandatory retirment at age 75 or maybe 80 would be an improvement. Some of those justices stay way past mental competence. Of course some are fine at that age. The odds stack against you though the older you get. At age 75, you definitely have lost a step.

Im not a huge fan of term limits for any office- though I do understand the purpose particularly with congressmen. When it comes to Supreme Court justices I believe there needs to be a renomination process after a period of time. Presently jurists engage in process of judicial supremacy that undermines the original intent of our founders and democracy itself. There needs to be a constitutional check on such usurpation.

imposing term limits on supreme court justices is basically saying that the more experience they obtain on the bench, the less value they have. in the history of the united states the justices who have served the longest often display a change in their ideology, either in step or in opposition to the situations present in the country at that particular time. this system, although imperfect, has weathered the test of time for over 200 years. i have much more faith in the judgement of our founding fathers than i do with the polititians and people of today.

No, but I do think legislation shoud be introduced that limits there power to create new laws. After all they are suppose to interpret the law not create new ones. This is a loop hole in process and needs to be address imediately because it is being abused all over the us, for the purpose of promoting a small minorities agenda.

No. The point of having the position for life is so that the Justices will make decisions based on the constitution and not make decisions based on what will get them re-elected. The Judicial branch was set up this way by the founding fathers to keep elected officials in the Executive and Legislative branches (who will and do make descisions based on popular/re-election opinion)in check with the constitution.

No, term limits is not an applicable choice for supreme court justices. These individuals are tops in their field and offer top notch decisions for situations that come up in our judicial arena. Maybe an applicable retirement age,,but never term limits.

I think they should have a mandatory retirement age. Probably high end like 75 or 80. But term limits? No, I don't. If Supreme Court justices had term limits then court appointments would become an even bigger political football than they are already.
kolby1973 10/28/2003
Absolutely ! And I personally think at least 90% of them need to replaced as they now exist....

The wrong ones should. ha
jamestkirk 10/08/2003
Never. If they did, their decisions would be politically driven.

No, I don't think so. The court members are, ideally, the finest legal minds in the nation, and their judgement should supercede the fads that come and go. That's the reason why the Justices do not have a term limit; the idea is to preserve sound judgements from prudent judges over a long period of time. Now, I DO support term limits for Presidents and Congressmen, but I think the Court should stay the way it is, without term limits, in order to create a balance between the recycled legislators and executives.
