That would be terribly hypocritical-people should be proud of the USA because we allow such actions-an oppressive country would ban flag burning-if you want liberty you need to tolerate many things.

My view is that this is a freedom of speech and expression issue. The folks who support such a law normally think its just fine to desecrate symbols they disapprove of or disagree with.

Desecration of the flag is obnoxious, but we have something in this country called freedom of speech, so go ahead and burn the flag, but don't be surprised if nobody is exactly singing your hosannas.

Desecration, distruction and disrespect of the flag is crude, ungrateful, and horrid. The flag represents liberty, freedom, and lives of every man and woman that died to protect it, and that is exactly why we cannot have laws to ban the desecration of it. The flag protects that very right, as rude and ungrateful acting out that right might be. The right to destroy the flag must always exist, if only so we may know that the right is there and we still have that freedom.

Freedom of speech, you f#cking morons. . .you can't make an object sacred. . .that's how the Taliban feels, remember? People have every right to be a dumb ass- they burn the flag because of idiots like you that want to make a sweeping, unconstitutional federal law that clearly violates principles of freedom. You're not scared of freedom, right? Imagine if an idiot burned the flag and no one cared or bothered to watch?

No there shouldn't be a federal law when it comes to flag burning. Symbols are nothing. ... You have every right to do what you want with the flag. ... I'd rather we pass federal laws when it comes to killing innocent domestic animals for their food.

For sure, it is our National symbol. You burn it or desecrate it, you crap on all of our beloved vets who have died for our freedom and that goes all the way back to George Washington.

Even though it makes me furious when I see someone desecrating the flag, passing a federal law banning any abuse to the flag could be considered going against our basic right to free speech. Anyone is allowed to demonstrate in any way they see fit, and that includes destroying the flag. I might not like it, but there's nothing the government can do about it unless the Constitution is changed.

isnt there already one?
Anonymous 03/12/2004
No, there should not be. People in America have the right to do anything they want to the flag--burning, ripping, whatever. I would never destroy the flag, but passing a federal law against this would remove another of our freedoms.

Like most Americans I feel a sense of pride when I see our flag. However, if you make it a crime to damage that flag then you have effectively trampled on exactly what that flag represents. The flag belongs to all of us... and we are all free to use it to express ourselves in any way we wish. We should be proud that it represents a form of government that allows us that freedom.

I think there should be a law banning a smuck like Kid Rock to wear an American flag.
RebelYell1861 12/20/2003
This is a toughy. I mean I'm definitely against the desecration of our nation's flag, but I also am against the passing of more and more virtually unnecassary laws.
