Only hot teenage girls should wear them... I mean, um... shit, no way out of this one, is there? *takes his "dirty old man" card*

This is hilarious. The problem is found in the fact that we don't allow teachers to control the classroom. Let them knock a few heads, and we won't need the white shirts and ties.

No, Schools do enough to kill Creativity.
Biscuithead 06/03/2009
Coming from a middle school student myself, I say no. We should be able to wear what we want, because we have the freedom to wear what we want in other public places, so why not in schools??? And then its unfair to the students that teachers and staff at the school get to wear what we want, and the students have to wear these tacky, boring uniforms. I mean really, how fair is that??
lmorovan 04/21/2008
Of course, Wearing uniforms makes students concerned with making sure uniforms are clean and according to school's requirements. A little imposed discipline never hurts. And it could be a step forward to develop other disciplinary habits that are always beneficial.
irishgit 04/21/2008
If my teenagers are anything to go by, they already do, except that the school doesn't describe the parameters. All of my son's friends dress identically, all of my daughters the same. When I was a high school student I dressed like all my buddies, as I suspect, did 99 per cent of the reviewers here. Stow the crap about uniforms preventing kids from being free to express themselves. There are few humans more socially conservative than a teenager. They are simply in uniforms of their own design.

Finally ~ something that FranksWildYears and I semi agree upon!! HAHA As I told him, as a mother, uniforms are a cheaper way to get school clothes ~ and also, being the mother of girls, there isn't the "what will I wear today" debate that almost always makes us late. A middle ground would be a "dress code" ~ that's what I had in school. Of course you always try to "push the envelope" (had to throw that one in), to the limits of that code, but hey, that is what teems do. My older daughter had uniforms all 12 years of school ~ it made no difference as far as "conformity" or any such thing (by judging all the kids). But, I remember in High School where girls would basically wear Prom dresses to school (most of the kids were on the high end of rich or the mid end of poor), and it was disturbing. Everyone trying to outdo everyone else ~ Blech!!!
fitman 03/19/2008
Though the current popularity of fascism (always a populist horror), conformity and blind obedience is more than just annoying, most kids where I live have chosen to wear self-imposed uniforms. They dare not be seen in other than the most trendy of labels.

"Bad theory. The idea that if kids wear uniforms to school it helps keep order. Don't these schools do enough damage makin' all these kids think alike? Now they're gonna get 'em to look alike too? And it's not a new idea. I first saw it in news reels from the 1930s, but it was hard to understand 'cause the narration was in German!" -- George Carlin
You are absolutely correct JimW1, school is about learning. And learning has absolutely nothing to do with dress code. How much have you learned sitting in front of your computer wearing nothing but your underwear? You don't have to answer that, by the way. Uniforms are about conformity and obedience. Learning should be about inspsiring inquisitiveness, and promoting critical thinking. If you haven't come out of the school system with the ability to be analytical, you haven't learned much. And if you have learned to be analytical you will hopefully find yourself asking questions like "Why the hell am I wearning this stupid uniform?"
MrJackHammer 03/19/2008
this is not about being an individual its about school. You can be an individual after school. Kids spend to much time worrying about what to wear and looks. Some kids can't afford the expensive clothes. School is about learning. America is way behind the world in results and spending more money is not the answer. Its accountability and uniforms help in that area,

i don't think students should wear uniforms at school.i am a student myself in high shool. i am a 11th grader. personally i think we shouldnt wear uniforms. i think we should wear what we want and dress how we want. if we don't want to wear uniforms we don't have to. they can't make us wear what we don't want to put on.
697antleydeta 11/16/2006
I think school uniforms are really not needed sometimes its ok to wear school uniforms butit gets to out of hand when you go on a fieldtrip you cant even identify your students to tell who they it would really be a big mistake
echounit7 11/02/2006
school uniforms suck nobody shoud have to wear them and nobody likes them.its ridiculous.so yt do we wear them...... because the school board sucks... written by adrian jones
Linn577 04/09/2006
I think schools should require students to wear uniforms so they won't get teased about their clothing and so parents won't have to get new clothes everday so their children can be popular at school. Uniforms are better than you think. Uniforms would be sooo much easier. Maybe you'll reconsider going against unifoms after hearing my points. Thanks!
CanadaSucks 04/01/2005
You think this will solve anything? American kids can't write, speak, or perform decent algebriac functions. They lag behind almost every other 1rst world nation in almost every subject. . .and you want them to wear matching unis? Americans have to stop using band-aids designed to make adults feel better. There is no way to improve schools - you can only improve kids by raising them and teaching them that they will either succeed in school or serve slop at Taco Bell.
EschewObfuscat ion 03/16/2005
They should be required to wear uniforms in those school districts where the school boards have voted for them. Stop trying to nationalize everything and reading some moralistic injustice into what is, has been and should be the purview of those local officials duly elected by taxpayers to administer the rules for their local schools and children.
Djahuti 03/16/2005
I don't think uniforms will stop the over-privileged from picking on the under-privileged.I think a uniform means you are in prison and must wear what is dictated and that is NOT how I think kids should grow up.Kids should be free to express their individuality, and should learn to deal with whatever kind of morons criticize them for whatever they wear anyway. The sooner they learn to stick up for themselves, the better,in this world.
Jar-Jar Binks 02/23/2005
Nope. What happened to freedom of expression? The school has no right to dictate what a student wears or not. ... My fellow students, wear what you feel like wearing.
Skizero 01/25/2005
i'd love to see this. take away their individuality early. that way they aren't shocked when they get chained to a desk at 22, for the rest of their lives. actually i went to catholic school and we wore uniforms. this didn't bother me so much, at least not as much as religion class, and having to sit their and listen to some nun, who'd never even gotten laid, tell me about Jesus. what do they know? anyway, we still had bad kids there etc, but i think that today with every Joe and Joanne worker letting their kids dress like gangstas and thugs, something needs to be done, at least in school. little johnny and juney worker can wear their Sean John after school
Mr.Political 01/24/2005
It depends. If school uniforms are only being required as a result of some local liberals spewing a load of crap about feelings of inferiority-then no, I don't support the idea. But if it's being done because the kids at that school are wearing pants three times their waist size and have shirts that are simply defamatory- I don't see why not.
Specialboothvi cJr. 01/23/2005
Students should be allowed to wear whatever they want.
Beloved 05/09/2004
from my experience the uniforms go on the grades go up and the violence goes down.
minkey 03/09/2004
I think it would be a good idea. I remember the kids who were poor or geeky were always given a really hard time and caught some serious beatings. I think wearing the same clothes would actually encourage the right form of individualism and creativity - kids will realize that it is not appearance that counts but personality.
ClassicTVFan47 02/26/2004
Depends on what they are. If they are bland and colorless, forget it! But, a Starfleet uniform? Sign me up!!! :) Irishgit brings up a good point about people wearing mostly what everyone else wears. I'm glad I did a little positive social rebellion and wore more bright colors than the norm and actually wore belts! I wish I had made more Iron-On transfer shirts of my own, then even my shirts could have been creative and unrealistic! :)
RunsWithWhiteW olves 02/26/2004
Hell no that would strip kids of the freedom to express themselves.
CherrySoda99 02/16/2004
While it does stop some of the hatred among students in your own school,it promoted more hatred and taunting from other children in other schools. Rebels are going to refuse to wear them, and a dress code is ignored. So what are you going to do. I personally don't think I could wear one, I wouldn't be able to play sports as good, and it wold drive me nuts!
LadyShark4534 12/24/2003
Nope. The reason why is because it's a waste of time. The uniforms will be paid by OUR tax money. Why should we fund something stupid such as school uniforms? I don't believe in trying to repress indivuality either.
andyjay 11/11/2003
No freakin' way. This is one of those things that extreme liberals and conservatives would agree on: liberals because it's more politically correct and conservatives because kids would not be able to wear evil midriff-baring shirts and Daisy Duke shorts.
kolby1973 10/28/2003
If it is a private school, then sure they should be forced to wear uniforms if that is their policy. But as for public school payed for by taxes, then hell no.
RebelYell1861 10/15/2003
Absolutely not. This idea takes away individual feedom and expression. Schools should educate people, not control their personal choices.
kamylienne 10/05/2003
Why bother? Everyone wears the same Gap-Ambercrombie-and-Fitch-Old-Navy getup anyhow, isn't that already a uniform? (PS. Sorry, ClassicTVfan, I'd have to disagree--if I had kids and they had to wear a Star Trek uniform to school, I'd seriously consider home schooling them.)
hill 09/22/2003
Let us were what we want to were, its just clothes.Whats the difference if we were uniforms,it will not make some teens/kids any better, their still gonna pick about what name-brand you got.
forgotten hero 09/14/2003
All high school kids wear the same crap anyway. So the gap is pretty much a voluntary school uniform.
BIGBABY 09/13/2003
What I wear to school is my business, and only my business. The purpose of schools are to teach, not be fashion critics.
