I've never been a big fan of the original series, it may have been great when it came out but I don't think it stands up in the present day due to our own technological advancement in part and the way storytelling has changed.Admittedly I've only seen a handful of episodes from this series and a couple of them I thought had good, strong stories; but the others I've seen and the plot details I've read for the others just scream of cheese. If I was flicking through channels and had nothing better to watch I probably wouldn't bother to watch this either (unless it was The City on the Edge of Forever). The recent reboot of the series, and the franchise as a movie has totally blown this series out of the water in my opinion - I totally, and thoroughly enjoyed the movie not only as a Star Trek film but as a science fiction movie. The exception to my dislike of this original series comes in the form of The Wrath of Kahn, The Voyage Home, and The Undiscovered County - all of which I think gave depth and level of interest to the characters and the story. If you're new to Star Trek I'd recommend ignoring this series and trying the even numbered films, the new film, or one of the more modern series.

Very outdated, but with the biggest ham on Earth, Shatner, in the lead, who could go wrong. Great stories, it is too bad the later STs couldn't rekindle the magic.

My favorite because of its innovation, original sci-fi themes, and strong characters. A show that was so far ahead of its time that it can't help but be appreciated. Quite daring in the themes and issues it dealt with for a '60s television program. Star Trek (The Original)not only paved the way for future sci-fi programs, it also paved the way for programs in the 70s that chose to have minority actors as regular cast members and programs that chose to highlight socially-sensitive themes.

Grandaddy of all the Treks... looks a bit corny and campy compared to Next Generation, but where else will you find Spock and my fav Scotty.... an icon of the free wheeling 60's

Star Trek was the first science fiction series that I can recall which used the theme of a brighter future where humanity had progressed. For the uninitiated (and there must be very few), the concept for Star Trek is a virtual city in space (ie a starship) which is on a five year mission of exploration. The crew is multiracial (eg Nichelle Nichols as Lieutenant Nyota Uhura) and multinational (eg Walter Koenig as Ensign Pavel Chekov) which suggests that most of the current social conflicts had been eliminated by the time in which the series was set; however, many of the same problems were encountered in space (eg racism and Cold War adversaries) which suggests that these issues may be part of life's condition. The special effects were ambitious, especially given the technological and budgetary limitations. The bottom line is that the series became an institution which has now become part of the common human experience as evidenced by the pop icons and lexicon that were generated by Star Trek (eg phaser, beam me up, and live long and prosper). Star Trek was originally broadcast from 1966 to 1969.

The best drama out of the 60s, the one that started the legacy, Star Trek has a great cast, the right amount of camp and humor and great writing.
