Star Trek: The Next Generation 1

Some people may hate me for this but I did not like this show. The people in it continuously whined. If they did it every once in a while, it wouldn't have been bad. But they did it over and over again.
On one episode Worf and a woman were beamed to a planet. They started getting into a shoot out. I thought that this was going to be an awesome episode but I was wrong. The woman got killed and when Worf was beamed back aboard the Enterprise, they started whining. My brother and my best friend disliked TNG also.
Another thing that I disliked about TNG was that the women were called Sir instead of Maam.
I wasn't a big Star Trek fan but after watching a bunch of the Next Generation episodes, I started appreciating the original Star Trek a lot more. The original Star Trek rocked. The Next Generation did not. I give TNG a 1 star rating.

Star Trek: The Next Generation 3

I grew up watching TNG (as it's referred to these days) and I remember enjoying each and every episode. I would always impatiently wait for the next episode to come out and would then enjoy the hour spent watching it. Having recently purchased all 7 seasons of this on DVD I can say that it no longer seems as good as it once did - there are quite a few episodes that now seem terrible. Despite this there are still a good number of episodes that I still enjoy.

One particular example of a good Star Trek TNG episode is "The Inner Light", my all-time favourite Star Trek episode from any Star Trek series. What makes this episode so good is not the quality of special effects but the story and the quality of acting in this episode. If you were to watch this series I'd recommend being sure to see any episode with the Borg in, and a good portion of the 2-part episodes as well.

The thing about this science fiction series that appeals to many is not just it's technology and their frequent techno-babel, but the depth which is given to the characters and the idealistic ways of them working to benefit humankind, not for their own ends. In this future their advancements have brought peace and equality to the world, both of which are very worthy goals, and their fleet of ships isn't used for militaristic purposes, but to explore new worlds and advance their understanding of the universe. Of course though there are plenty of conflicts in this series, mostly with other species, which does kind of mirror the conflicts between nations.

If you exclude the film that rebooted the franchise, then the best film is one of the TNG ones: First Contact. Once again the crew of the Enterprise face the Borg as they attempt to interrupt Earth's first contact with an alien species so that warp technology was never developed and the United Federation of Planets was never created meaning that the Borg in the "current" timeline had managed to assimilate the planet. The movie was a great blend of action, drama, suspense, and acting tied up with an excellent score. This film is enough to remind anyone why the like Star Trek.

Star Trek: The Next Generation 5

A great follow-up to the Original Series and no Star Trek production that has followed it has lived up to the levels that NG achieved. Great cast, direction, production, and writing. Did not quite reach the level of the original, but that was expected. Certainly a better production than the Original, but that had more to do with the times and what they had to work with than anything else. The Original paved the way for NG's success and they did a good job of following up on the themes and characterizations that were established by the Original. A very enjoyable program that I still enjoy watching on syndication from time to time.

Star Trek: The Next Generation 5

Best of the Treks, even with Whoopi Goldberg. Episodes were well written and thought out. The Borg greatest villians of all time

Star Trek: The Next Generation 4

I didn't like Star Trek: The Next Generation when I first saw the program. The special effects looked weak even for the later 1980's (I suppose for budget reasons), there were just too many characters, and I first thought the show felt like a futuristic soap opera (eg Deep Space Nine). Nevertheless, I grew to love it, and TNG remains the best of the Star Trek series. Eventually, as the show became more popular, the special effects got more elaborate (again I suppose with better financing), though I speculate that the occasional holideck episode was inserted for budgetary considerations. Generally, the casting and plots were excellent and imaginative. For instance the producers scored a real coup getting Patrick Stewart to play Capt. Jean-Luc Picard (though no Frenchman would ever be entrusted with this responsibility ~snickers~), and Brent Spiner proved to be the most versatile cast member as the inspired android Lt. Cmdr. Data. The series was progressive placing female actors in strong and substantial roles (eg Gates McFadden as Dr. Beverly Crusher), and the producers correctly reversed the originally planned roles for Marina Sirtis and Denise Crosby who ultimately played Counselor/Lt. Cmdr. Deanna Troi and Tasha Yar, respectively. The worst casting and screenwriting choice was (of course) Wil Wheaton as Wesley Crusher. Star Trek: The Next Generation introduced better alien races and further developed those from the original series (eg the Klingons and Romulans). Finally, this series was largely successful due to its naval themes and protocol, resulting in the chain of command and duties seeming better defined and structured than the science fiction shows that preceded the series.

Star Trek: The Next Generation 5

Although it had some slow episodes, the extremely-optimistic, awesomely-acted and superbly-written science fiction show that is The Next Generation is an immortal classic.
