I did my Master's Thesis on blimps. The one thing about hydrogen is that it is 4 times lighter than helium (hence 4 times more lift capability). Without hydrogen, having big blimps just ain't feasible. Though the Hindenburg disaster accelerated the demise of the big rigid dirigibles, earlier disasters on the Navy's AKRON and MACON foretold that Lighter than Air flight was never going to fly.

At one point in time, this was thought to be the future of aviation. In the end, it turned out to be an evolutionary dead-end. There were plenty of worse ideas in the 20th century.

an idea that ended in disaster. Watching the Hindenburg catch fire and seeing all the people that died. Getting it on camera was sad but could at least give a chance to study what went wrong.

An idea that went off with a bang.

Hydrogen filled blimps were an interesting idea in the 1930's. Unfortunately, people back then didn't really realize that hydrogen was such an unstable element. The height of arrogance was when the Nazi's constructed the Hindenberg and sent it on an around the world tour in 1937 to tout Germany's technological superiority. So much for that, it exploded over suburban New Jersey. Oh the humanity!!

If only they'd get them off of talk radio.
