When this drink first came out in 1985, I drank one. YUCK!!! It tasted like crap. Diet Coke tasted better. Whoever made the first batch of the new Coke was insane. I heard that Coca-Cola was improving this drink so two months later I decided to take a gamble and buy a 2 liter bottle of new Coke. It tasted pretty good. It was a hell of a lot better than the first batch.
I still remember how that many people were mad because they stopped selling the original Coke. I'm pretty sure that somebody was going to sue them. People were selling what they had left of the original Coke at high prices.
I hope that you weren't one of the people who drank some of the first batch of the new Coke. It was not a pleasant experience.

Conspiracy theory time! I think they did it to remind us how much we all love their product and they needed to do something extreme to boost sales.

In marketing lore, this is still referred to as the day Coca Cola blinked.

This had to have been a calculated move for the Coca-Cola company.

the New Coke was not near as bad everyone said it was. But it wasn't great either. I think Coke was trying to make their drink taste more like Pepsi, in which it didn't taste anything like it. But I think Kamylienne is probably right when it did more good for Coke than bad. And who knows if it was done on purpose or not?

Perhaps not as bad an idea as it seems. Did it taste horrible? I don't know, I don't remember trying it. Most people agree that it tasted horrible, but when they brought back the Classic Coca-Cola, sales of Coke skyrocketed. Was it done on purpose? Probably not. But, hey, it worked out better for the Coca-Cola company in the long run.
