I always wanted a radio-controlled car, but the best I ever got were the cheap ones with the cord connected to the controller, so you had to follow it around everywhere.

Hmm. . .can be fun. But these range from cheapies that break in a matter of minutes to very expensive and elaborate hobbies that hone engineering skills.

A word of parental advice here. If your kid is under 13, don't spend a lot of money on these. Buy the cheap ones, because the kid will generally get bored with it relatively quickly. The reason for that is that until you start spending some serious coin here, (in multiple hundreds) these don't come close to living up to expectations.

As a kid, I had a few and liked them but I always liked to drive mine through puddles so they quickly broke. I guess that's why my mother only bought me about 2.

I had a remote control dune buggy. It was really fast. Maybe a little too fast because I jumped it and when it landed, it broke the drive shafts, and cracked one of the wheels. But, it flew.
