Valet is a totally different animal. Being in San Francisco doesn't make the business any easier. I originally came out to run hr but when the city manager quit I got pretty involved in operations. I took on sales, customer service, payroll, scheduling, auditing, and filling in as a doorman or running cars when necessary. We valet for 9 hotels in the city and have 100 employees. In the 6 months I've been here, I've seen about 50 damage claims, over 30 employees quit or get fired and another 30 get hired, 4 management changes, several thefts, 2 joyrides (think Ferris Bueller's day off), and have been threatened to be dropped by each of our accounts more than once. Most recently, a valet was driving a 2004 Viper 70 mph up Leavenworth (a residential street) and smashed into a parked Honda, hitting it so hard it damaged the building it was knocked into. There's just too many problems...if a day goes by where the worst thing that happens is some customers complained about the long wait, it's a day in paradise.

Okay Im going to say this job did get me through college and I ended up opening my own valet parking company after running a valet company for years... all of it paid the bills and the business did quite well. However, the actual job sucks at times. Running around in all kinds of weather, parking numerous cars while running around and trying to keep the lots in order is nothing like the piece of cake job most people envision. The tips varied from great to very poor. If you were lucky enough to work a good account you could make as much as $350 in a night parking only 50 cars or as little as $40 parking 75 cars over 8 hours... It was steady cash though for me during my college years so I have to be grateful in some respects... but I can think of many other things Id rather be doing.
