ItemImageAmazon.com's review of "Me and Mr. Johnson": It's impossible to overemphasize the importance of singer-guitarist-songwriter Robert Johnson's contribution to blues music. The same can be said of Eric Clapton, one of Mr. Johnson's most dedicated interpreters. From his work with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers to Cream and beyond, Clapton has arguably attracted more widespread attention to Johnson's music than any other living musician.

I was dissappointed in it. Clapton had always used the blues as a touchstone for his hard rock and pop leanings, occassionally placing one or two full on blues numbers on each album. With his Unplugged album he demonstrated a previously untapped affinity for the acoustic country blues and it heralded a new era. Finally the first great blues rock guitarists was willing to release full albums of blues playing, starting with From the Cradle. Unfortunately with that album, this one and Riding with the King, he has fallen into the revese trap of having his rock background serve as the basis for his blues work. He has not let go of the hard punching side of his playing and let the loose limbed folk roots of the blues shine through. This is usually most evident when you see Clapton playing along side an American bluesman who has a stronger sense of the funky rythmic origins of the blues.
