I have always liked the customized GTO that the Monkees drove in their TV program. It turns out that there were actually two Monkee-mobiles, both of which started life as 1966 automatic transmissioned GTOs. Car number one was customized by Dean Jeffries and was the car seen on the TV show. Car number two was customized by George Barris and was used in tours, promotions and car shows. The first car was modified throughout and a supercharger was installed but it was too much power for the suspension and made the car difficult to drive so the blower was removed and a dummy blower was installed to maintain the look. The car ended up in Australia, then Puerto Rico, where it had been used as a hotel guest transport vehicle. The car was in very good condition considering that it had been used daily for 30 years. A few modifications had been made but everything worked on the car. Eventually it was purchased by a collector and now makes its home in a private collection somewhere in New York City.
