One time I was in a position where my current wife had left me but we were not divorced. I started dating my soon to be next wife. The current wife warned me that the wife to be didn't like me dipping all that grizz any more than she, the soon to be ex-wife did. I should have listened.
ms-66728340 08/09/2008
cheating
cherokeebetty 09/13/2006
I have dated people my friends and family disapproved of. What kills me is that they are usually right. It is worth listening.
Djahuti 09/13/2006
It may be worth a listen-sometimes family and friends see something you're missing in the early stages of romance-but ultimately NOBODY picks my girlfriend for me.Especially if it's based on some kind of prejudice.
Vudija 03/10/2006
It would depend on WHY they disapprove, I guess. If they can PROVE (with 100% accuracy) that he is cheating on me-and that is why they disapprove-then I'll take it into consideration, obviously. If it is something like religious, racial, political differences or something even more ridiculous; then no. As long as the person is treating me well, then nothing my family could say would change my mind.
trebon1038 10/23/2005
This is a tough one. If my family and close friends disapprove there may be something to it for me to consider...after all they only want to see me happy.
sperryc 10/13/2005
AScott, you make some good points -that you have to assess people's motivations before you take their advice to heart. Moreover, disapproval isn't a good reason to dump somebody on its own, but, in my experience, it tends to be a harbinger of future failure. Your friends and family know you and, depending on who you're talking about, can usually be objective. Basically, they know when you're dating a loser. Plus, I've dated girls that my friends didn't like hanging out with and that becomes a major point of contention among everyone involved - makes for some very awkward moments.
jazzybee 01/07/2005
Not up to the friends or the family to decide who I date. That is a silly way to dump someone.
AndrewScott 09/09/2004
When two single adults find true love for each other, such happiness should be allowed to subsist without others making things irrationally difficult. Some family/friends may err in withholding support due to any of the following: (1) An overprotective streak (2) Fear of losing your relationship (3) Inability to let others be happier than themself (4) Not understanding differences in personal tastes. That being said, there is always a chance that a family member or friend may be better able to see a serious red flag than a person who may be blinded by their need to be loved. Be honest with yourself to whether your partner is truly capable of the unconditional love and support you desire. If reasonably confident that you have the real deal, then you can't allow others to run your life for you.
