In 1913 he pioneered the idea that electrons travel in orbits around the nucleus of an atom and that the number of these electrons determine the properties of any given element. He was the first person to put forward the idea that these electrons can go down to a lower energy orbit from a higher one, thus establishing the subfield of quantum physics. He was one of the scientists who was at the forefront of nuclear research in the mid-20th Century. Indeed later in his life he participated in the Manhattan Project to develop the atomic bomb. Like many physicists such as Albert Einstein who worked on the project, Bohr went on to oppose the use of atomic energy for warmaking purposes. Some say that he and other scientists were wrong to develop this technology, but someone would have developed it at any rate.
