 | VirileVagabond (38) 07/05/2006 | "Coming Up" was originally released as a single with the live and studio versions on the flip sides. (The studio version was subsequently included on the full-length "McCartney II" in 1980). While the studio recording is enjoyable though a bit flat, it was the energy injected in the live recording from Glasgow (i.e. the version I'm reviewing) which made the single a huge hit. The song proved that McCartney had survived a period of soft rock (e.g. "With A Little Luck") and disco (e.g. "Goodnight Tonight"), returning to a much harder, and faster paced style. "Coming Up" charted in the U.S. for 16 weeks in 1980 (peaking at #1 for 3 of those weeks). The Squirrels and John Faye Power Trip have both recorded covers of the song.
