Velazquez was a Spanish painter who was the leading artist in the court of King Philip IV. In addition to numerous renditions of scenes of historical and cultural significance, he painted scores of portraits of the Spanish royal family, other notable European figures, and commoners, culminating in the production of his masterpiece Las Meninas (1656). I've only recently come to appreciate Spain's greatest artist. The subject matter and colours of many of his paintings are not always instantly appealing, but when you take a closer look...! For absolute mastery of tones and texture, see The Waterseller, and An Old Woman Cooking Eggs,an extraordinary composition, with the young boy's arms and head seeming to float in mid air.The Toilet of Venus is,literally, elegance personified,.The portrait of Pope Innocent X brilliantly captures a personality that is anything but innocent. The Surrender of Breda has its surprises, the portraits of Infanta Margarita have immense charm. His masterpiece, though, has to be the awesome Las Meninas. Here,Velasquez comes outside himself to not only include a self-portait,but also place the viewer as the King and Queen of Spain,( vaguely glimpsed in a distant mirror),confronted by members of the Royal family and court(and a less than excited dog!).A painting which never fails to amaze me.Had he created nothing else,he would still have to be considered among the world's finest artists.
