 | VirileVagabond (38) 07/05/2006 | "Goodnight Tonight" was released as a single in 1979 while disco was still ruling the airwaves (and subsequently added as a bonus track on the CD release of "McCartney II"). While McCartney received a lot of flak at the time for incorporating some disco elements, an objective listen finds an excellent song which is much deeper. The song is lush, but also a bit jazzy with a nifty solo which features two guitars talking to each other in a fashion which fits well with the theme of a young lover attempting to convince his date to not cut the evening short. The end result is a fun, smooth and light single that still sounds good today despite the death of the music genre that inspired it (though there is a rare 12" true discofied version of the song still lurking out there). "Goodnight Tonight" charted in the U.S. for 13 weeks in 1979, peaking at #5. Unfortunately, I am aware of no other artists who have covered the song.
