oh how i remember being forced to do square dance in grammar school. being forced to dance with a boy who at this age they had yuck looks on their faces having to dance with us icky girls. now as an adult I have no interest in wearing a gaudy dress and twirlling around.

Back in junior highschool they dedicated a certain number of gym classes to learning to square dance. At grade 8, this was the first time I got to put my hands on a girl in a social situation, so I'll go the extra star for that, but no more.

For a great laugh, get a look at the old Bugs Bunny cartoon "Hillbilly Hare" which has an extended, and hilarious squaredance sequence.

This social dancing may be too taxing for some indviduals as the number and combinations of commands from the caller may be too large an intellectual challenge for some. However, square dancing is hands on exercise, not concerned with foot movement, but does require coordination of thought and movement. The dance movement is world-wide and always in English. Master the basics before you criticise.

I 'd probably enjoy square dancing if I hadn't been subjected to the torture of having to learn it in gym class in elementary school and junior high. It's a fine dance for happy, drunk Appalachian yahoos, but they can keep their stupid do-si-dos and turns and whatever the hell other terms there are in square dancing. I've chosen to forget the terminology!
